War or Peace Journalism in the Coverage of the Egypitan Revolution 2011 (Abstract)

On Tuesday 25th January 2011, protests erupted throughout Egypt which eventually led to the overthrowing of the regime of President Mubarak. The purpose of this study was to determine to which extend the local and international media has favoured an either War or Peace Journalistic framing in their coverage of the Egyptian Revolution. This study examines the coverage of the 2011 Egyptian revolution by five online newspapers: two local newspapers from Egypt and three international newspapers basically in the US. Using Galtung’s model of War/Peace Journalism, a content analysis of 96 articles on the revolution from two local and three international newspapers was carried out. This study revealed that the two local newspapers especially the “Egypt Independent” tend to be more War journalistic in their reporting on the revolution than their international counterparts. The three international newspapers, The “USA Today” was found to frame the Egypt Revolution in the most War Journalistic narrative. Contrary, the New York Times and the Washington Post were found to be the two most Peace Journalistic of all five newspapers.
