Abstract of Team Mali

On the 21st of March 2012, the Malian government was overthrown in a coup d’état by the Malian military. This exploratory study is aimed at exploring the discourse in the media on the coup d’état by analyzing the media narratives from a peace/war journalistic view.  The research covers the time period of one week, starting off with the day of the coup itself. The data was collected from 18 newspapers and seven news channels which have been analyzed with the program Leximancer, an innovative tool for automatic content analysis. The grounded theory approach led first to the creation of a concept map showing the general discourse including all available data by dividing it into themes and concepts. For further investigation, additional concept maps were generated to compare the types of news sources, and three trend maps were created to contrast the days of the analyzed week, both divided into the two types of news sources and including all the data. In the end, this method of content analysis allowed us to interpret the findings from the concept maps within a peace/war journalistic perspective.
